Description of the Research Center

I. SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY:

1. Analyzing the canonical historical heritage of the Church in organized form, defining some important central research topics which could be observed from different aspects.

2. Discovering the contemporary meaning of the origina6l ecclesiastical texts.

3. Presenting the contemporary religious attitude during the initialization of the ecclesiastical daily routine.

4. Express and interprets well the goal of the Church, keeping in mind the primary intention of the ecclesiastical discipline: i.e. the salvation of soul.

5. Precise presentation and supporting through primary research of sources and auxiliary material that theology and canon law are real science, not only in the early classification of knowledge, but in its modern sense; supplied these by the proper methodological technic.

6. Interpretation of those texts which issued through the life and activity of the Church.

7. Organizing yearly meeting to use the digitalized material of canon law history which is most rich collection in Europe now.

8. Educate the next generation to understand the analyzing method (paleography, codicology); the contemporary canonical concept; the theological meaning of the canonical texts; to make them expert in the former sources of canon law collections.

9. Arranging research projects, study days and academic training to promote the above indicated goals.

II. THE ICLHRC'S STRUCTURES INVOLVES: Director, Head of the Scientific Council, Scientific Board, Core Members (members of the Scientific Council), Members, Affiliated Members, Independent Researchers, Collaborators, Scientific Advisers, and PhD or Postdoctoral Scholars.

III. THE ICLHRC'S COOPERATIONS: The ICLHRC likes to keep a good and active scientific relation and cooperation with the other internationally recognized similar institutes, namely with:

1) ICMAC (The Catholic University of America, Washington DC., USA);

2) Stephan Kuttner Institute (Yale University, New Haven, USA);

3) Medieval Institute of the University of Notre Dame (South Band, IN.);

4) Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies (Toronto, Canada).

- St. Jerome' Conference (Budapest, September 30-Oct.1, PPKE HTK) : Canon Law presentation by Prof. Anzelm Sz. Szuromi, "Effect of St. Jerome 's writing on the ecclesiology of the medieval canonical Collections". 

-  900 Anniversary of the Norbertine Order (International Conference, Gödöllő, Hungary, Sept. 10-12, 2020) : St. Norbert of Xanten established the Norbertine Order (Oder of Prémontré) in 1120. This three days international scientific conference opened the celebration of this unique anniversary. From the contemporary (11th-12th century) canon law point of View Prof. Anzelm Sz. Szuromi gave his contribution: "Reform of Canonical Life of the 11th-12th century". 

- Because the pandemic of Covid-19 does not let the personally presence, Prof. Anzelm Sz. Szuromi - as part of the ICLHRC' program - gave a videoconference on "Scambio di lettere tra il vescovo di Siena e il vescovo di Venezia nella seconda meta del XII secolo" (Siena - Venezia; September 1st, 2020; 4. 00 PM).

- Sacrifice and Ritual from Abraham to Christ (31st Szeged International Biblical Conference; Szeged, Hungary) The International Canon Law History Research Center Canon Law Institute was represented there by Prof. Anzelm Sz. - Il sacramento del matrimonio come cammino di fede in Joseph Ratzinger/Benedetto XVI (Budapest, PPCU FT, March 23rd 2020): Professor Anzelm Sz. Szuromi, O.Praem. gave a summarized descriptive overview on the sources and conclusions of Mirjana Gegaj new volume on "The sacrament of marriage as a journey of faith at Joseph Ratzinger" (Siena, 2019), which was issued originally as a PhD Dissertation at Pontifical Lateran University, John Paul II Pontifical Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Sciences (Rome, Italy). This detailed scholarly analysis was a local conference presentation at the Theological Faculty of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University (Budapest). Because the pandemic situation in the academic sphere, the conference-presentation was done via on-line, in form of videoconference. Prof. Szuromi presented the theme in Hungarian, English and Spanish, make it available to the Hungarian and international PhD students, moreover for postgraduate scholars too.
